私はイタリアに旅行に行ったある日、ある違和感を感じました。なぜ家の中はあんなに綺麗なのに車の中が汚いのかと。One day on my trip to Italy, I felt a certain discomfort. I wondered why the inside of my house was so clean but the inside of their car was dirty.
それは明らかに矛盾ってやつですね。日本にももちろん矛盾はありますが、衛生観念でいうと大体の海外の観光客は日本のイメージを綺麗ととらえますね。ただし、旅行客は日本の公共の場所にゴミ箱がないことを訴えています。That’s clearly what you call a contradiction. その事件は考えただけでも体が震えるわ。あと、考えられるとすれば、ゴミ箱を増やすことは、管理費や清掃費の負担も増えるので、行政としても悩ましい問題なんじゃないかしら？それに加えて、2020年からの新型コロナ拡大も、ゴミ箱撤去に影響を与えたみたいね。使用済みマスクやティッシュなどが不衛生な状態で捨てられるリスクがあったため、感染予防の観点からもゴミ箱を減らす傾向がますます強まって、みんな神経質になってたのを思い出すわ。
このように、広域事件対策やコストの問題、さらには感染症対策が重なって、日本中からゴミ箱が減ってしまったわけですね。That incident makes me shudder just thinking about it. In addition to that, it seems that the expansion of the new corona from 2020 has also affected the removal of trash cans. I recall that people were nervous about the risk of used masks and tissues being thrown away in unsanitary conditions, which led to an ever-increasing trend toward reducing the number of trash cans from the standpoint of infection prevention.
So, in this way, the combination of measures against widespread incidents, cost issues, and also infection control measures led to a reduction in the number of trash cans from all over Japan.
ここまでは日本の不思議だけど、イタリア人についていつも疑問に思うのは、スーツの着こなしや食に関しての意識の高さ、美しさにこだわっているはずなのに、道を歩けばゴミが落ちていたり、煙草のポイ捨てや公衆トイレの汚さが目立つわ。家はあんなに綺麗なのに少し不思議。So far, it’s a wonder of Japan, but what I always wonder about Italians is how they wear their suits, how conscious they are about food, and how they are supposed to be obsessed with beauty, but when I walk down the street, I see trash, cigarette litter, and dirty public toilets. Even littering of cigarettes is common, and although I don’t do it, I don’t pay much attention to it. People are people. I think Japan has a sense of respect for public spaces, so there are fewer problems like that. Smoking areas are revolutionary, aren’t they? Smoking areas are also available in the city, so smokers and non-smokers can coexist. I wonder if they will set up smoking areas in Italy?
路上タバコは本当にやめてほしい。ナポリのピザ屋さんの前で順番待ちをしているとき、ほとんどの待っているお客さんがタバコを吸うから、一瞬、私はお寺のお線香で煙まみれになって清められているんだと勘違いしたくらいだわ。I really wish people would stop smoking on the street. When I was waiting my turn in front of a pizza place in Naples, most of the waiting customers smoked, so much so that for a moment I thought I was being cleansed by the smoke from the incense at the temple.
あと、僕は日本に住む前から家の中は土足厳禁にしてるよ。その方が部屋の汚れが少なくて済むし、掃除は楽になるからね。でも一般的にはイタリアは家の中は土足で入るよ。その理由としては、家の中の床が汚れていたら靴を脱ぐことは衛生的とは言えないし、靴を脱ぐことを不快に感じる人もいるよ。あとは足元が冷えるのを防ぐためかな？それに日本ほど湿気がないから足が蒸れることも少ないし。Also, even before I came to live in Japan, I have strictly prohibited the use of dirt in my house. It makes the rooms less dirty and easier to clean. But in Italy, people generally go inside their houses with their feet on the ground. The reason for this is that it is not hygienic to take off your shoes if the floor inside the house is dirty, and some people feel uncomfortable taking off their shoes. The other reason is to prevent your feet from getting cold. Besides, it’s not as humid as in Japan, so feet don’t get steamed as often.
確かに冬のイタリアに行ったときは家の中の床がセラミックタイルでできていて、足元が冷たくて靴を脱ぎたくなかったのを覚えているわ。それに日本にいるほうが湿気で不快感が高く、いつも掃除しなきゃいけない気持ちになるわ。特にイタリアの乾燥した地域では頻繁にシャワーを浴びなくとも快適だし、カビも発生しないから濡れたタオルを放置しても乾くだけで臭くならないし、日本ほど神経質にならなくなるのも頷けるわ。I do remember that when I went to Italy in the winter, the floors in my house were made of ceramic tiles, and my feet were so cold that I didn’t want to take off my shoes. And in Japan, the humidity is much more uncomfortable, and I always feel like I have to clean up. Especially in the drier areas of Italy, you don’t have to shower as often, and there is no mold, so you can leave wet towels out to dry and they won’t smell.
